Joining my Local Lions Club

 PELionsLogoREGIAN Lions Club, Sunshine Coast

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things – supporting people with a disability, community greening, adopt-a-road, fundraising, including BBQ’s, to raise funds for worthwhile causes.

The Lions Club of Peregian is situated on the Sunshine Coast covering the already established suburb of Peregian Beach and the establishing suburb of Peregian Springs together with the “eastern” beach suburbs of the Sunshine Coast.

The club was chartered on 13 November 2009 and our first Charter Dinner Meeting was held on Saturday 13th February 2010. We have 43 members and steadily growing

I joined this amazing club almost exactly 2 years ago at a time in my life when I was particularly lost and looking for a direction in life.

For any of you who have read my previous blogs, I arrived in Peregian Beach over 3 years ago, coming initially for 6 weeks, to try to recover from Cancer treatment. I have not been able to bring myself to leave and much of that is due to joining this club. I have made friends and been given a sense of purpose that was particularly lacking at the time.

I went to the local Peregian Beach Fashion Fiesta and was impressed by the effort these people had made for such a wonderful community event, so I asked about joining.

6 weeks later I was welcomed with open arms by an amazing group of people with an incredible desire to help the local community. Since I have been there we have held 2 more successful Fashion Fiesta’s, held many Bunnings Sausage Sizzles, collected Car Parking money at the Eumundi Markets, raised money for lots of local community groups, created a new chapter of OZ HARVEST- REAP, which collects and distributes quality food from local restaurants for use at centres that help the local poor and needy, and helped young people grow by taking part in the public Speaking contest Youth of the Year.

I have made some lovely new friends and been made to feel like I am actually contributing to something worthwhile which has helped me in lot’s of ways I can’t even express.

Some of the causes we supports include:

Katie Rose Cottage

The Sunshine Coast Community Hospice Ltd provides support care to terminally ill adults, children and their Carers living on the Sunshine Coast, from Gympie to Caloundra and surrounding districts.

Katie Rose Hospice a 6 bed facility is a beautiful extension to a person’s home, fully equipped and adapted to provide high quality nursing support care to those unable to manage their final journey in their own home.

How amazing is this!!!! How disgusting is it that they don’t get more support from the government? Who wants to die in a hospital surrounded by tubes and sickness, when they could choose a beautiful place like this. The people who work and give their support to this place should get a ticker parade. They are local heroes to me.

Katie Rose Hospice is at 855 Eumundi-Noosa Road, Doonan. Qld.Katie Rose Cottage

A few of our incredible, passionate members took it upon themselves to set up the local chapter of this group and are now collecting hundreds of kilos of food that would have gone to waste to distribute to other groups in the area that help the poor and needy.Whilst this looks like a wealthy community there are so many needy people that no-one ever hears about.

Reap is a regional food rescue toolkit developed by OzHarvest.

As the leader in the food rescue sector OzHarvest has developed this toolkit to share our expertise and knowledge on how to rescue good food to feed people in need.

  • Reap food rescue™ connects local food businesses with local charities through local community members for the benefit of people in need
  • Reap food rescue™ means you can ensure good food does not end up in landfill
  • Reap food rescue™ means charities can use more of their funding for rehabilitation and education and save on purchasing food
  • Reap food rescue™ means good food goes to feed people in need

LEAC Inc. has been working with people who are homeless since 1979. Funded under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) since 1985 and supported by Lions and Lioness Clubs, it offers a multi-target generalist crisis service in the Sunshine Coast Region.

This cause is one that really appeals to me as it helps so many woman in need with nowhere else to go who are victims of domestic violence. With Christmas coming up stress seems to cause this to happen so much more and there is nothing sadder than seeing a sad homeless child with a beaten up frightened Mum at Christmas.

Sunshine Butterflies

“A logical disability support service and charity supporting babies, kids, tweens, teens & adults with a disability & their families.”

Sunshine Butterflies is a registered charity and approved service provider that offers services and support to people with a disability and to their families.

Sunshine Butterflies offers a range of services which includes the personal fundraising opportunities, support groups and workshops, swim and recreation programs as well as offering information and resources for carers and families to connect and network with each other or to other services.

I love the services this group provides and am so proud something I do helps them.

We have just recently assisted a local family to buy a smart pup to help them with their 2 children in the Autistic Spectrum. Last year we helped them buy a computer to assist one of their children at school.

The following list of completed Community Projects is continually growing.

  • “Walk For An Aussie Kid” – May annually
  • Lions Prostate Cancer Research facility fundraiser
  • Peregian Beach Square Meal & Fashion Fiesta
  • Adopt A Road Clean up project on David Low Way, Peregian Beach
  • Noosa Hospital – Driving Patient Transport Buggy
  • Christmas Cake sales in November & December annually
  • Collect used spectacles to grade and send on to third world countries.
  • BBQ at Opening of Peregian Beach Community Centre
  • Regular BBQ fundraiser at Bunnings Noosaville.
  • Coolum High School Breakfast Program
  • Participate in Lions Youth of the Year project with 2 local secondary schools participating.
  • Sell merchandise on behalf of Cancer Council on Daffodil Day and Pink Ribbon Day.
  • Assist Sunshine Coast Legacy Badge Week.
  • Provide breakfast at Coolum Peregian RSL Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony
  • We operate the car parking at Eumundi Markets on a regular basis.
  • Assistance to families in need.

I have been Mrs Claus as we sold Christmas cakes in the local area, collected raffles for our Fashion Fiesta and been responsible for preparing the Eumundi Car Parking Roster.

I have made lots of noise at Youth of the Year to support our local candidates and gotten to meet so many people in my community I would never have had the chance to meet.

These people are all heroes to me. They give their time and efforts and care without any expectations. All my life I have moved around and never really been part of a local community as I was always too busy. I have been given a very needy sense of purpose.

Please lock away Saturday 29 November in your diaries when we will be holding a Bargain Hunt at Aveo Peregian Springs Country Club. Lots of goodies to sell and if it goes as expected we can raise a considerable amount for our Activities account. We might even get to sell some Lions Christmas Cakes,

I can’t recommend joining your local Lions Club enough.
